Get a More Complete View of Building Performance with Occupancy Tracking

Building engineers, property managers, and sustainability teams have told us they need a better way to understand how occupancy affects energy use and costs. If you manage a portfolio, predicting future costs requires a more complete understanding of how occupancy and energy use interact. And if you’re focused on sustainability, having all relevant data in one place is essential for identifying the best opportunities for efficiency improvements. Gridium’s new occupancy tracking feature brings everything together for a more informed approach to building operations.

Let’s take a closer look.

Not Sure How Occupancy Affects Energy Costs?

When energy costs fluctuate, it’s not always clear why. Are higher costs the result of more people in the building, or is there an operational issue? Until now, occupancy data has been siloed in spreadsheets, making it difficult to draw clear connections to building performance. Our users—building owners and operators—asked us for a better way to integrate this data into the Gridium platform so they could analyze it alongside energy, cost, and efficiency trends.

In response, we’ve launched the ability to track occupancy data, giving you better visibility into both leased and physical occupancy—all within Gridium. Now, you can correlate occupancy trends with building performance data in one place, making it easier to uncover inefficiencies and make well-informed decisions.

Bringing Occupancy and Energy Data Together in One Place

With the new occupancy tracking feature, Gridium makes it easy to track and forecast occupancy trends—both leased (contracted space) and physical (the actual people in the building). Instead of hunting through multiple sources, you can now see occupancy data alongside energy use, cost trends, and other key performance indicators in the Gridium platform. This integration provides a more comprehensive view of building behavior, helping you make better-informed operational decisions.

Incorporating building occupancy data into Gridium helps building operators get a clearer picture of the correlations between energy use, costs, and occupancy.

How It Works

You simply enter occupancy data into the platform, and it’s displayed in energy cost history charts, variance reports, and budget forecasts. Now that occupancy data lives in Gridium instead of scattered spreadsheets, you get a more holistic understanding of building performance, leading to smarter, more informed decision-making across your team.

How This Helps You

  • If you’re an engineer, you can compare occupancy with energy use to quickly diagnose unexpected spikes—no more guessing if the HVAC is overworking.
  • If you manage properties, you’ll have a clearer picture of how occupancy trends impact costs, helping you create more accurate budgets.
  • If you focus on sustainability, you can identify buildings where efficiency measures will have the greatest impact, based on real-world occupancy patterns.

This is just the beginning. Occupancy tracking is the first in a series of upcoming Gridium features designed to bring more building data into one place, giving you a more comprehensive, real-time view of performance and operations.

Ready to get started? Simply log into Gridium, click on “Occupancy” under your building’s “Building info” tab and enter your data.
