Analyzing your building’s usage › Tracking events across your portfolio

Tracking events across your portfolio

The Events tab gives you one place to see everything that’s been happening across your portfolio. Instead of opening each building’s load chart to check its notes, you’ll find every event from every building in a single list that you can filter, group and dig into.

Events include the notes left by Gridium’s analysts, the ones our automated detection adds (e.g. demand peaks and holiday usage), and notes written by people on your own team. Notes attached to both meters and buildings all show up here.

Finding the Events tab

From your portfolio, open the Usage section and click the Events tab.

You’ll only see events for buildings you have access to. If a building is missing from the list, check with your account administrator about your building permissions.

Reading the events list

Each row in the list is a single event. The columns are:

  • Building/meter: The building the event belongs to, and the specific meter if it was attached to one.
  • Event: The event’s title in bold, with the first couple of lines of its description underneath. Click the row to read the full text.
  • Date & time: When the event happened. The list is sorted with the newest events at the top.
  • Type: What kind of event it is. Anything written by someone on your team shows as User note, and automated events as something like Demand peak.
  • Author: Who wrote it. Events from Gridium’s analysts and automated detection show Gridium; notes from your team show the person’s name.
  • Comments: How many comments the event has. If it doesn’t have any yet, you’ll see an Add comment link instead.

The line above the table tells you how many events are in your current view, and how many of those have comments.

Choosing a date window

The list starts by showing the last 7 days. Use the date range control at the top of the page to look further back, or to move the window to a different point in time. It works the same way as the date controls on the load chart; see Navigating through time for the details.

Filtering the list

Three dropdowns let you narrow the list down:

  • Region: Show only buildings in one or more regions.
  • Building: Show only specific buildings. If you’ve picked any regions, this list only includes the buildings in those regions.
  • Category: Show only certain types of events.

Each dropdown stays open while you check and uncheck options, so you can pick several at once. The button shows All when nothing is selected, the name of your choice when you’ve picked one, and a count (e.g. “3 selected”) when you’ve picked more.

When any filter is active, a Clear filters link appears next to the event count. It resets all three filters but leaves your date window and grouping alone.

If your filters leave nothing to show, you’ll see “No events match these filters.” Your filters stay visible so you can see what to loosen up.

Grouping events

Use the Group by dropdown to switch from a flat list to a summary view:

  • Building: One row per building, with the buildings that have the most events at the top. Each row shows how many events the building has, which types of events they are, how many comments, and the date of the latest one.
  • Category: One row per event type, showing how many events of that type there are, which buildings they came from, how many comments, and the latest date.

Groups start collapsed. Click a row to expand it and see its individual events underneath, newest first. Set Group by back to None to return to the full list.

Helpful Hint: Grouping by building over a 30- or 90-day window is a quick way to find the buildings that keep coming up. A building that sits at the top month after month is usually worth a closer look.

Viewing event details and comments

Click any event to open its details. You’ll see the full title and description, the building and meter it belongs to, and any comments people have left. You can add your own comment from here, too. The Add comment link in the Comments column opens this same view.

To see the event in context, click View this on the load chart. This takes you to the building’s load chart with the date window set around the event, so you can see exactly what the building was doing at the time.
